International Days of Action in Solidarity with Bradley Manning

Date: September 16-19
Location: Everywhere
Facebook event

Individuals and activists will take to the streets to show support for accused WikiLeaks whistleblower on September 16-19.

On September 16-19, groups and individuals will call on the United States government to drop the charges against Army Private First Class Bradley Manning. Twenty-two year old Manning, held in solitary confinement since May, has been charged with releasing classified documents including a video that shows American troops shooting and killing Reuters journalists in 2007. (Watch the video at www.collateralmurder.com) Manning’s imprisonment has resulted in an international outcry, with groups and activists throughout the US and abroad demanding his release and calling for transparency in America’s war policies. Famed Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg has called Mr. Manning, “A new hero of mine.”

Act Locally!

Activists should work within their communities to organize events locally during the International Days of Action. If you aren’t involved with a local group, contact your local affiliate of Veterans for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War or Code Pink, or look for activist groups in your area.

Be Creative

Many activist groups are planning vigils, marches and rallies in support of Bradley Manning – but there are other ways to get involved. Some ideas:

  • Consider throwing a Whistleblower Party – with whistles as party favors and a donation bucket for Bradley Manning’s defense fund
  • Work with a restaurant or club in your area to organize a fundraising event
  • Host a lecture with a local college and sympathetic professors or anti-war activists to talk about the importance of transparency in government
  • Organize a public screening of Collateral Murder

Anything that spreads the word about Bradley Manning’s wrongful imprisonment will help. If you act during the International Days of Action, your actions will be part of a global support effort.

Coordinate Your Event with the Bradley Manning Support Network!

If you are organizing an event locally, please email Support [at] bradleymanning [dot] org– we can help!

  • Tell us the date, time and location of your event and we’ll help promote it via website, social networks and affiliates
  • We’ll send you Bradley buttons! If we have them available, we’ll do our best to send you some promotional materials. http://www.couragetoresist.org/x/content/view/851/
  • We’ll post pictures of your event on our website – so remember to take photos and send them to Support [at] bradleymanning [dot] org

Promote Your Event!

If you’re organizing an event, let people know. Many groups have shown support for Bradley Manning – you just have to get the word out!

  • Print up flyers and leave them in local coffee shops (some materials can be found on the bradleymanning.org wiki)
  • Ask local activist groups to put your event on their calendars
  • Contact peace organizations in your area and ask them to notify their mailing lists about the event
  • Search Meetup.com for groups locally that might be interested in your event and ask them to add your event to their calendars
  • Put up posters at local colleges and libraries
  • Add it to community calendars in local newspapers
  • Post it on Craigslist.org under the Community tab. Cross list it under Politics, Events, Activities and General
  • Email the event details to Support [at] bradleymanning [dot] org and we’ll get the word out, too!

Follow the Law

If you are hosting an event in a public space, be sure that you do not block traffic or prevent people from using the sidewalk. If you are having a large event, examine whether you need to get permits.

The National Lawyers Guild can offer legal observers for events. Contact your local or regional National Lawyers Guild chapter or email Support [at] bradleymanning [dot] org if you are unable to reach a nearby chapter.

    Hey Laurel,

Under “promote your event” above, there’s a link to the place on the wiki where people can download those.

The wiki is also reachable via the now-renamed “activist resources” link at the top of each page.

If you or anyone else come up with other text/graphics to use, please send them to support [at] bradleymanning [dot] org, or just upload them to the wiki yourselves.

Finally, we’re also happy to ship items to you or to other groups putting together events for the Days of Action. Please get in touch!

I saw one sign that said : “REPORTING WAR-CRIME IS EXEMPLARY”

I guess that only goes for crime thats not committed in the name of money.
What the group of people behind the USAggression is trying to say is: ” Even mass-murder and genocide is OK as long as it’s for money. And done by those who control money.”

But the truth is ..That if that was the case.. then all other nations followerd the example, and ignored the international laws, did war of aggressions and all other manner of war crime ..as long as it’s for money.. it would be “OK” too

The imprisonment of a soldier, because he has denounced the wrong doings of the U.S. military in the name of the country, is a sign that we are in moral bankruptcy. We are sinking as a society into an irrational, self destructive behavior, where those who stand for what is right are punished like criminals, and the wrongdoers get away with their crime.

    Dear Readers,
This is a most important issue; the Bradley Manning case is of great importance within its self, but this is also about basic democray. Whilst we consider the case of Bradley Manning we should maybe look across the sea of surounding issues. I’m sure that many of these have slipped away from the minds of the general public, or are still unknown to the many. If we, the ordinary people do not campaign and resist the high level of criminality that has taken place; we will see unrivalled horror in the future.

    Hypatia,

I just sent you an e-mail regarding the event at the top of the Santa Monica Pier @ Ocean and Colorado (Palisades Park). I have all of the materials: a banner, buttons, info cards, stickers and posters, which I will put on sticks to make signs, and a limited number of t-shirts available for purchase. The event will be held on Sunday the 19th from 1-3 pm, to coincide with the Arlington West project on the beach below the bluff. I will buy pizza at Bruno’s, a nearby restaurant, for everyone who attends, after the event. Metered parking is usually available on Ocean Avenue, and public garages are plentiful on 2nd Street.

    Thank you so much Laurel!

I was really excited for it but I just found out that my high school is forcing my class to wait tables at a fundraising dinner that night. I really wish I could come but if I skip they will give me detention for a month.
So instead I’m holding a screening at my high school this Friday.

Hi everyone and thanks Skdadl for your message. You are right, our Toronto Day of Action in support of Bradley will be at the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue starting at 12:00. It would be great if you could come! I will be bringing information cards, buttons, signs and whistles and also postcards for people to sign for Bradley and for President Obama. We will also be raising our voices — and our whistles — in support of the War Resisters. There is an important vote in our parliament on September 29th. I set up a Facebookk page called “Toronto Believes in Bradley Manning and Peace” but now can’t seem to get into it. If anyone knows people in Toronto though, I would really appreciate it if you would share this message. And to all of you amazing people of the BMSN who have hosted an event or who have one coming up in the next two days, Toronto salutes you!!! Peace :)

    Hi,
I just wanted to say that…
I am with Bradley because exposing a crime is not a crime.
    It is a duty.
    The silence is a crime.
Under the shadow of silence, everything can be said and anything can be done.
    We all know perfectly.
Hidden by that veil, some might even convince the others that a war can be a peace mission.
Hidden by that veil, civilian deaths are just casualties.
Hidden by that veil, even murderers are celebrated as heroes.
And hidden behind that veil, all opponents are necessarily traitors.
    (It continues here: http://betweentwosouths.blogspot.com/2011/03/wikileaks-bradley-manning-free-exposing.html)
