Transparency & Democracy: Why the U.S. Should Free Bradley ManningTransparence et démocratie: pourquoi les USA devraient libérer Bradley Manning
On December 17, in a prison cell in Quantico, Virginia, Bradley Manning will be celebrating his 23rd birthday alone. Manning stands accused of releasing classified documents about America’s wars and foreign policies, including the Collateral Murder video showing American troops killing two Reuters employees and civilians who offered humanitarian aid to the wounded. Many speculate that Bradley Manning may be responsible for the Afghan War Diary and the Iraq War Logs, which show in frightful detail the scores of civilians being killed by America’s ongoing foreign wars and the inhumane tactics employed by our troops overseas. And last week, the biggest leak of all: the first wave of over 250,000 secret diplomatic cables that have brought to light America’s bullying imperialism and backroom deals.
Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and ex-Pentagon official KT McFarland are calling for Manning’s execution, while Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is vowing “aggressive steps” will be taken against those responsible for the leaks. As WikiLeaks scrounges to find a way to keep their site alive after being shut out by PayPal, Amazon and EveryDNS, Manning is held in prison, unable to meet with his family and prevented from getting the vast majority of his mail.
Reviewing the still-unverified chat logs between Manning and unscrupulous journalist Adrian Lamo prior to Manning’s arrest sheds light on the motivation and goals of the alleged whistle-blower. Manning stated that he hoped the publication of the diplomatic cables would spur “worldwide discussion, debates, and reform.”
Manning stated: “I want people to see the truth… regardless of who they are… because without information, you cannot make informed decisions as a public.”
This speaks to the real purpose of the leaks and the reason every citizen in America should care deeply about the fate of Bradley Manning.
America is a democracy. We take pride in the fact that all citizens have the right to participate in our government. Based on the promises, history, and positions of our politicians, we citizens make decisions about who we will elect to represent us.
But democracy is destined to fail if voters don’t know the truth about their government.
As the ACLU has pointed out, it is because of conscientious whistle-blowers that we now know about secret CIA prisons overseas, the level of civilian casualties in the Iraq War and the NSA’s warrantless wiretap program. This is information that can and should impact how the public feels about our government. It’s information that belongs in the public domain, even if it makes Washington politicians uncomfortable. Because when Americans become frustrated or disenchanted with their elected representatives, we have the right to replace them.
This is why transparency is vital to a democracy. Whether or not you agree with America’s wars, you must know the truth to form an educated opinion about them.
Informed citizens are the foundation of our society. In the last year, WikiLeaks has provided damning evidence detailing how the United States government has obfuscated, down-played and misrepresented the reality of our foreign policy. This is the unique, powerful, and necessary role of whistle-blowers: to shine a light in the darkness of corruption, secrets and falsehood.
If Bradley Manning is, in fact, the WikiLeaks whistle-blower, then we owe him our gratitude. He embodies the principles of democracy that would make our founding fathers proud.
For Bradley Manning’s birthday, to be celebrated in solitude in a military prison cell, we’re calling on all citizens who believe in democracy to sign a petition for Manning’s freedom and make a donation to our defense fund. Manning will be facing the full force of the United States’ wrath over the leaked documents. You can save him.

No one who self-publishes press releases like this one about himself can be considered a journalist at all, “scrupulous” or otherwise.
dam scence gandhi thing this is not over stop this war
I agree 100% mike, after reading your link. If he is a Journalist, then he is one without a spine, but plenty of double standards. I wish Bradley sincere luck and hope he is back home with his family very soon.
Hillary Clinton and our ex-Vice President should be hung together as their words show them to be enablers of Murders and criminials within our goverment.
This is such an injustice (compared to the evidence it exposed!!) This whole witch hunt is a disgrace. Our actions “The U.S.A.” are the real reason people live in fear (Propaganda supplied by FOX unNEWS)not wikileaks or Bradley Manning! I feel shocked that there are only 6 comments? A REAL Hero sits ALONE behind bars for telling the truth but there isn’t more outrage? PLEASE BUG all your friends to support his freedom and I am doing the same. Be sure to get an annoying drunk Tea bagger relative drunk enough to sign some petitions if you can!!!
Baradly is a hero.
seriously outraged. I’m not a U.S. citizen, but I can surely feel sympathy and outrage on behalf of those in the U.S. who seem to be forgetting that all this effects us all as humankind. Bradley sits by himself in the prison while those who were alleged in the shooting of innocent journalists in Iraq walk free. The lies that Bradley(if indeed he is the whistle-blower) and Wikileaks have uncovered have forced me (and countless others) to change their views about the united states.
Its one thing to indulge in conspiracy theories, its a whole other thing to sit here and watch humanity slowly poisoning itself. As a dominating power in the world, the U.S. has absolutely no ideas of its moral, ethical responsibilities.
I hope that this guy gets free. He has done the world a great service.
The imprisonment of Mr. Manning makes me ashamed to be American. It just goes to show you that corrupt politicians are willing to do ANYTHING to save themselves from the public humiliation of being exposed for the crooks they are. Our country owes Bradley Manning for exposing the truth. Stay strong Bradley! Our prayers are with you!
I’m Dutch and I only read today about this tragedy via Wikileaks. I’m so sorry to hear this. It’s a disgrace for all humanity that this boy is imprisoned. Go Bradley, you’re the real hero!
Bradley seems to be ‘guilty’ of telling the truth.
His country should be proud of him.
Shame on the u.s. administration and viva wikileaks !
tea party,fox network,goverment,republicans,democrats,white people,black people,brown people,yellow.
red whathever third world, first world, rich, poor, judes, catholics, muslims, gays, straight, women, men, all the human kind .
we are responsible of the things that happen in this world.
the people who are sitting on the couch who do nothing and the people who still doing the attrocities.
unsastifaction of life .
This is a real shame! First they murder thousands of people in Irak and now that someone says stop! they lock him up and try to murder him too.
I cannot believe that the USA who always pronounce, that they’re for freedom and rightiousness can get through with such a thing.
This only shows how they politicians and states are playing with their power and that should be a high alert for every citizen of the world, that we need to be aware of not loosing our freedom! if we not already lost it
I hope Bradley Manning will receive a fair and open trial, if he does and America is accused of breaking the “Geneva War convention terms”,I hope they receive a fair trial too! “Justice for all” I think that is written somewhere isn’t it??Only by doing this openly will the rest of the world and Americans themselves ever believe in America again.
‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’
Burke.
Well, Bradley, you are indeed a good man. No matter what they do, they cannot change that.
I’m a UK citizen. Our politicians are just as spineless and self-serving. If Bradley is the person who ‘blew the whistle’ then good on him. I hope he is freed soon.
I saw a link relevent to this on one of my friends facebook pages. I started to see what it was then i discovered this. I think I remember seeing something on the news, but of course you never get the whole story there. What a complete and utter outrage! Turning 23 next year I am about the same age as Bradley and can’t believe the courage this young man has shown for this country. He literally gave his freedom to show all of us an insight on the “war” we are funding, and to show that people are dying over there for absoultely nothing. This is America. The Land of the Free and home of the Brave? And Bradley is an extremely brave young soldier fighting for what OUR nation is supposed to be built upon, freedom, with his young life.Thank you for bringing this to the public eye. May God Bless and be with you and your family, Bradley. And I hope justice will prevail for you. Peace and Love!
When Novak, Rove, Libby and Cheney leaked the identity of a CIA agent. Their motivation was to discredit the truth about WMDs in Iraq. If this kid is prosecuted then prosecute Cheney too.
These leaks are to EXPOSE the TRUTH. The question is………………
Can we handle the truth?
Good for Bradley!
Huh, “Home of the free, and the land of the brave”… At this point in time I don’t think the words United States and freedom should appear in the same sentence. It’s no wonder most of the world hates our neighbors to the south. I wonder if there’s a provision in international law for the arrest and detainment of people who try to cover up stuff like this. If so, we need somebody else like Brad to pull it off. Heh, wouldn’t that be a sight.
Really though, this would be understood as an honest mistake if it weren’t for the whole cover-up and subsequent detainment of Bradley. Can you blame the guys in the Apache for firing on a group of guys with AKs and RPGs? Hardly. Hiding it, though, is entirely different.
To all you American politicians: get a grip. The world does not need you to be the aggressive big brother. The real threats to your survival as a superpower are sitting in Congress and elsewhere in legislature. Trying to make the world do it your way is going to end up with the world doing without you, and it would be nobody’s fault but yours.
I just sincerely hope Canada can separate itself from the U.S. enough that they don’t take us down with them. This country has so much more to offer than that.
Mr Huckabee shame on you. Mr Manning is presumed innocent until proven guilty in America. How can you be considered a US presidential candidate?
Mr Manning is 22-23 old soldier needs to be given due process and all his rights. Worse criminals get far better treatment than what this US soldier has been put through.
Why can he not meet with his family? In America it is said that you cannot give cruel and unusual punishment. What is the motive in punishing this guy with solitary confinement.
We clamor for human rights across the world while we cannot take care of our own duplicity.
This man deserves the greatest protection he can receive as a true hero of the American democracy.
Praise for Nicki. You said it all … and so right. Mr. Obama? I — and so many others — need to know where you stand.
War brings no good things.
I now believe that this is the beginning of the end for the mighty USA. Yet all along they have tried to show the world how democratic they are while in a cloud of smoke they kill innocent lives even those that are helping the wounded. Geneva Convention and additional protocols at its worst.
Mr. Manning might not be left to live as they have clearly shown, and will do all to silence the boy but by killing him they only open the graveyard of the people they have murdered before in the name of protecting freedom.
I am suddened by this evil, indeed woe under to the nation that onced prouded itself as the epitome of civilization while they so much are a barbaric society, making sport of the lives of the innocent and oppressed societies.
Am only sorry that the world has been sleeping all along while the US committes this atrocities. Mr. Ocampo should stop his trivial and shoddy work trying to solve where there are no problems and should go for all those that have killed and maimed. That have murdered innocent lives. America today stands in judgment for violating basic human rights principles and indeed every responsible individual should be taken to the Hague for face all counts of both criminal nature, crime again humanity, economic crimes and gross abuse of International agreement.
The world has to stand and say no lest you perish
I really don’t understand why everyone is going after Bradley when the US Government killed all those kids in a bus and they go off scott free. Bradley exposed the government for what it is with rock solid proof and now he is going to jail. This is not the first time the corrupt USA politically correct government has screwed the American public either. Remember the man that flew his plane into the IRS building for the crap they pulled on him? It only figures the government would try to hush everyone and throw him in jail for showing the world the injustices of the American Government. I say to you that American Government members in Washington responsible for the Apache helicopter firing on the bus load of kids and other offenses need to be thrown in jail, not Bradley. They are the true traitors.
Let that inside trader Hillary Clinton say whatever. She couldn’t catch a train at a train station. It figures that anywhere there is a scam involved, she would be there. Bring it Hillary… You suck. Can’t even satisfy your own husband where Monica can!
Being a Catholic from Northern Ireland, I have a natural distrust of the military. Just as the British troops here massacred innocent bystanders in January 1972, the American troops are unthinkingly destroying the lives of many families within Iraq. I think its only right that we are at last getting the facts. Free Bradley!
I honestly cannot believe that the American government didn’t just throw it’s hands up in the air and say “OMG our soldiers did what?”. Supposedly, democracy, free speach and the openness of information are all paramount in America, yes what he did technically amounts to treason, but only if he exposed something, that truly was going to be harmful to the security of the nation or specific persons, which from what I can see, he did not. Locking him away and trying to have him executed for treason is nothing more than admitting that you would have never released the information if he hadn’t, which surely makes you more guilty than him, does it not?
To me, this amounts to no worse a crime than that committed by previous whistleblowers, the guy who leaked the Vietnam war docs for example, he aint dead, he was talking on some video I watched while following Bradleys case.
I must echo anothers views above, Bradley is innocent until proven guilty, granted, he should be held in a secure location and perhaps only have restricted access to the outside world until it’s over, but it should be over very quickly, IF found guilty, then at worst he should be given a commuted sentence with mitigating circumstances cited. Right now he is only a suspect on the word (And quite possibly very easily forged computer logs) of a “former hacker”. IF he did it, then he revealed a truth to the world, which clearly would not have been revealed otherwise, not only that, but he felt guilty about it. Done, not only in the safest way he felt possible, but also in a way which is commonly chosen by many in these modern times.
Aside from anything else, Lamo is clearly a very lame hacker indeed, for a start he apparently uses AIM (No self respecting hacker I know would use it, let alone talk of their activities over it) and secondly his friends seem to feel the need to constantly report him as a former hacker. NO ONE is a former hacker, you’re either an ethical one, or an un-ethical one, you might switch between the two permanently, or temporarily, but you’re never a FORMER hacker. If Bradley did in fact communicate what is shown in the logs, it was somewhat silly of him to do so over electronic communications with someone who apparently had an agreed surrender with the FBI previously, and therefore would obviously be under electronic surveilance, probably the reason (Although he’s touting it that he’s a hero for grassing Bradley up) that he turned Bradley in, because the chats were spotted during surveilance of Lamo. Probably also the only reason computer logs from an alleged hacker would ever be considered evidence enough to arrest and incarcerate anyone, because they saw it happen. This of course will no doubt not come to light, because they no doubt had no warrant to surveil him.
I wish Bradley the absolute best of luck, I would not have had the guts to blow that whistle, nor would I have had the restraint to not talk about it to anyone until Lamo if I had. My thoughts go to his family and friends who no doubt miss him dearly and I wish for a speedy end to this whole situation, for all of them.
Good luck
Good luck Bradley. Our stupid first president once said the tree of
freedom is watered with the blood of our heroes. Stupid idiot forgot to
say that the heroes aren’t them but innocent guys wonder what Hillary
would have said if her kids had been shot or bombed in Iraq.
Bradley Manning deserves the Nobel Peace prize!!!
A TRUE American Hero. and Hopefully not the last!!!!!
Prayers and thoughts to Bradley and his family.
I support Bradley. It is incredible to see courageous people in prison while other cowards are outside
No matter what happens, Bradley Manning will go down in human history as an inspiration that courageously stood for justice and human rights! Life imprisonment or death will only emphasize this point, while revealing the indecency of the U.S administration for all to read in the history books of tomorrow.
Bradley shall not be punished, he should be declared as a hero.
His action is more worth than any prize or awarding in world.
Because sentencing Bradley (to death) might be some kind of war-declaration to the ideals of the U.S. itself…!?
My question: IS IT A CRIME TO FOLLOW YOUR OWN HEART, DOING WHAT IS NEEDED TO BE DONE, AFTER YOU REALIZED THE TRUTH???
After all kind of information, I know that Bradley is a patriotistic guy. His intention was not to blame the U.S. – Army; He intended changes… changes, which were promised by our actual president… propably to get more votes at the election!
WHAT ABOUT THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE? WASN’T THERE SOMETHING ABOUT CHANGING, EVEN GOVERMENTS???
I hope I can meet him… Not in Quantico, not in the U.S.; As a free man, who did what he believed in was right, and never give up even if they push him down.
Bradley, if you will ever read this:
YOU ARE NOT ALONE! THE GERMANS DO NOT HAVE A BETTER SITUATION IN AFGHANISTAN! I KNOW THERE WILL BE ANOTHER LEAK SOON! DON’T GIVE UP! AND I HOPE YOU’LL BE BACK HOME ON BIRTHDAY!
I hope this is not tha last kickass for those guys, continuing scorched-earth-tactics around the world. THIS IS VIETNAM 2.0 !
Yours sincerely,
Netzblockierer
America is in some serious trouble and this young man has only begun to shed light on all the horrible things the UNITED STATES Government has done and tried to hide from the public eye. The US is a bully and eventually bullies loose there power and then what happens. Personally, I only hope that I can find another country to live in because America will soon change and for the worse. The secret CIA prisons, killing innocent civilians, list goes on and on I am sure. There needs to be a COMPLETE over hall of the US government and quick if there is any hope of saving America.
Independent, that he’ll get himself in each history-book, he’s a hero… Maybe somebody in Norway can write a postal mail to present him as novel-prize candidate. I mean, if a chinese, nobody in western europe heard of get this, why not an u.s. – soldier?
Indepenendent of this, I’m woundering that nobody tried to take him out of Quantico… I mean, it’s not as hard secured as it looks first…
Several countries even offered him passports, citizenship and even ranking as ambassador!
you’ll see on WL asap!
I wish this kid well. Im about disgusted with the handeling of things at the top, too.
I just think its sad that despite this massive outpouring of support, that short of a Presidential Pardon, this kid is screwed. He did break a constitutionaly sound law. But sometimes you have a greater obligation to uphold your conscience than the law, and I admire his “balls.”
Id love to donate but something tells me my security clearance would be ganked in about .2 seconds if I did.
In Germany there is a very popular saying: “Lies have short legs”. All this lies in diplomatic relations have not brought freedom and peace, but war, intrigues and killing. Bradley and Wikileaks start up a big chance to change this system, to bring more honesty in politics fore the good of all peoples. Therefore it was absolutely nessacery not to only report about a few crimes, but bring out the hole truth about diplomatic affairs. We heared single crimes before in the media and this never changed a thing. Only with the whole truth we have a chance for a better world. Thanks Mr. Bradley and thanks Mr. Assange! I hope You both will get at least a nobel price in some time for risking their lifes for the good of all man.
Mr Manning’s name in history may well be associated with great movements such as the Magna Carta and the American Revolution as both are watersheds of human progress against monarches and oppressive governments, each event a wider opening for peoples’freedoms.
Just read the Adrian Lamo press release – Jesus Christ what a self serving sh*t he is, a truly pathetic excuse for a human.
… and sorry I got so upset by the Adrian Lamo press release that I almost forgot why I came here which was to applaud the sheer guts of Bradley Manning – I wish I had half of his integrity and courage.
This is terrible he is only 23, just think of the terrible things going on in that prison. I am ashamed to be an American.
This goes to prove my theory that the government is coving stuff up. the government should really look at themselves before judging others.

It is to all our concern that the US goverment is focused on prosecuting Bradley and wikileaks and dont talk with an word about the prosecution of the murders and war criminals.
With this behavior from the US goverment we all see how heartless, ruthless and merciless corrupted the US goverment is. This way all will turn against the US.
An with all, I mean everybody all over the world.
Or do they think we are all blind and mutants?

Bradley is very good.
Prayers for Bradley, my brother in spirit. I couldn´t sleep the hole night when I saw the video from the helicoptercrew first time. Thank you for your courage and for making it public. Right now I feel not to set my foot on US-Staate ever again. This murder elite has blood on their hands. I served for my country 10 years and when 9.11. happend I felt with US, but today I feel just empty and I think the US has given back the pain to unguilty people a thousendfold. Free Bradley Manning a brave warrior with intact human senses and a brave heart.
Why arrest correct people?
Why may armament manufacturers and their suppliers run around as honoured people?
The focus is not on people who ARE guilty in a system that’s running on money. If you fight for humanity you appear to be against the money system. If you really did do nothing criminal they will “find” something against you.
