Update 8/1/11: Obama’s Whistleblower War meets challenges, Sydney peace activists to discuss Bradley at upcoming event
Independent reporter and Bradley Manning supporter Glenn Greenwald wrote an article on July 30th entitled “Obama’s Whistleblower War Suffers Two Defeats.” It covers the recently failed prosecutions of both NSA whistleblower Thomas Drake and CIA whistleblower Jeffrey Sterling. This sends a beacon of hope to the Bradley Manning support campaign. (link)
Why has Bradley Manning been treated so harshly? Cast as both hero and traitor, the case against Bradley Manning raises issues of duty, honor and what it means to be a good citizen. Sydney Solidarity will be hosting a talk this Tuesday, Aug 2nd, titled, “Bradley Manning versus a culture of Revenge”, where they will discuss Bradley’s case given both the supportive and vengeful actions around it,
“it will consider how, if he is the leaker, his heroically sane example to humanity may help to instigate a change from a culture of secrecy and revenge towards an open, emphathetic society, more able to face the great challenges of achieving peace, sustainability and social justice.” (link)
Stuart Rees, writing on the Sydney Peace Foundation’s blog, announces the event, and develops a number of the positions for and against Bradley Manning. The leaked documents have been shown to have done a lot of good, but does this outweigh the duty he took on with his job? Has Manning’s inhumane treatment made it impossible to have a fair trial? Was he given due process? Read more about the importance of the “commitment and outspokenness of responsible citizens” on the Sydney Peace Blog.
Also in Sydney, Sallie Don, of the Australian, reports that Julian Assange will be speaking, although probably not in person due to his house arrest, at the Festival of Dangerous Idea on September 30th. His talk is titled “WikiLeaks Has Not Gone Far Enough.”
