Stand with Bradley Manning during his April 24-26 hearing

Events in the Washington DC area and internationally in support of accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower

Nobel Peace Prize nominee Bradley Manning’s next appearance in court will take place April 24-26 at Ft. Meade, MD.  At the previous hearing on March 15th, Bradley’s lawyer filed a motion to dismiss all charges based on the government’s failure to present evidence as requested.  Additionally, a broad coalition of media groups filed a complaint because documents from the court proceedings have been mostly shielded from the public’s view.  (Read more about the failures of the military to provide due process in this case here.)

We are calling for conscientious citizens everywhere to organize in support of Bradley Manning during his next hearing.  Drop all charges against Bradley Manning–punish the war criminals, not the whistle-blowers! Join us in the Washington DC area if you can.  Otherwise, host or attend a solidarity event in your community. Ideas for local events include: town square vigils, community forums, concerts, and house party fund-raisers.

From the American Left History blog, dated March 17, 2011

Why I Will Be Standing In Solidarity With Private Bradley Manning At Quantico, Virginia On Sunday March 20th At 2:00 PM- A Personal Note From An Ex-Soldier Political Prisoner

    Markin comment:

Of course I will be standing at the front gate to the Quantico Marine Base on March 20th because I stand in solidarity with the actions of Private Bradley Manning in bringing to light, just a little light, some of the nefarious doings of this government, Bush-like or Obamian. If he did such acts. I sleep just a shade bit easier these days knowing that Private Manning (or someone) exposed what we all knew, or should have known- the Iraq war and the Afghan war justification rested on a house of card. American imperialism’s house of cards, but cards nevertheless.

Of course I will be standing at the front gate to the Quantico Marine Base on March 20th because I am outraged by the treatment of Private Manning meted to a presumably innocent man by a government who alleges itself to be some “beacon” of the civilized world. The military has gotten more devious although not smarter since I was a soldier in their crosshairs over forty years ago. Allegedly Private Manning might become so distraught over his alleged actions that he requires extraordinary protections. He is assumed, in the Catch-22 logic of the military, to be something of a suicide risk on the basis of bringing some fresh air to the nefarious doings of the international imperialist order. Be serious. I, however, noticed no “spike” in suicide rates among the world’s diplomatic community once they were exposed, a place where such activities might have been expected once it was observed in public that most of these persons could barely tie their own shoes.

Now the two reasons above are more than sufficient reasons for my standing at the front gate to the Quantico Marine Base on March 20th although they, in themselves, are only the appropriate reasons that any progressive thinking person would need to show up and shout to the high heavens for Private Manning’s freedom. I have an addition reason though, a very pressing personal reason. As mentioned above I too was in the military’s crosshairs as a soldier during the height of the Vietnam War. I will not go into the details of that episode, this comment after all is about soldier Manning, other than that I spent my own time in an Army stockade for, let’s put it this way, working on the principle of “what if they gave a war and nobody came.”

Forty years later I am still working off that principle, and gladly. But here is the real point. During that time I had outside support, outside civilian support, that rallied on several occasions outside the military base where I was confined. Believe me that knowledge helped me through the tough days inside. So on March 20th I am just, as I have been able to on too few other occasions over years, paying my dues for that long ago support. You, brother, are a true winter soldier.

Private Manning I hope that you will hear us, or hear about our rally in your defense. Better yet, everybody who reads this piece join us and make sure that he can hear us loud and clear. And let us shout to those high heavens mentioned above-Free Private Bradley Manning Now!

February 23, 2012-And, of course, I will be standing in support of Private Manning as long as he is not freed from the clutches of his jailers.

  3. Good luck to you in your efforts to get Bradley Manning freed. He has great support and sympathy in Great Britain.

  4. It’s particularly satisfying to see this level and intensity of support for one of the great and elemental American servicemen. He really should be in an executive position with regard to legislation, instead of being threatened with execution while Cheney and his puppet Bush walk around lording it without culpability or the threat of jail time. Bradley Manning for Congress!!!

  6. Bradley Manning has been punished for nothing more than embarrassing the US government. I would like to point out that this sort of embarrassment is easy to avoid. Not by keeping things secret (& punishing anyone who dares expose them) but by consistently behaving with high ethical/moral standards. If the government hadn’t fallen so grievously short of this benchmark, Pvt. Manning would not have felt compelled to make the details public. Thank you Bradley.

  7. Dear Mr Manning,
People of good conscience all over the world are supportive of you. Australian’s are thinking of your stuggle against tyranny. We hope that your treatment is fair and reasonable during your extrordinary pre-charge, pre-trial prison sentence. Australian’s hope that any judicial decisions and decisions of public authorities made in regard to your cicumstances are wholly reveiwable by independant statutory bodies.
We pray that your human rights are being respected and that you are not subject further to any State sanctioned cruel and unusual punitive measures. Remain strong and remember ‘a day is darkest just before dawn’. Your bright day’s on the horizon.

  8. I never thought Barack Obama would adopt the tactics of a dictator until he unleashed his Atty. General on Bradley Manning and Julian Assange for nothing more than bringing to light what 60%+ Americans of every political persuasion believe: The Iraq and Afghanistan wars are phony,trumped-up atrocities not worth starting, much less, perpetuating for 10yrs. He has set a terrible precedent: Embarrass the President, Military and/or State Dept. and you will be locked up in solitary and threatened with life in prison or death for “aiding the enemy”. To think we have come to this in the erstwhile “land of the Free”.

  9. I so desperately wish for Bradley Manning to receive a fair trial, despite the sinking feeling in my stomach that it will be virtually impossible for him to receive one. The terrible irony of his situation is impossible to escape: we teach our children to do what is right, stand up and speak out when we see something that is wrong; yet here sits Bradley, facing the possibility of life in prison (if not worse) for doing just that.

The US wants the world to follow its principles of so-called freedom – of speech, of spirit, of self – and democracy. Yet the way the Government has handled this whole thing speaks volumes of the hyprocirsy and inequity that is so clearly at its heart. Of all the despicable things that people get away with saying, doing and encouraging in this world, why is it Bradley Manning who faces the greatest wrath of the US Government? People who promote racial intolerance (KKK, anyone?) and crimes against children, women who seek abortions/contraception, people who love someone of the same gender (Westboro Baptist “Church”); why do they get to spout whatever evil they wish without barely a slap on the wrist, and for telling the TRUTH, Bradley Manning faces loss of liberty, if not life. I support Bradley Manning. I support the push for his freedom. If I – and we – don’t, we all face being in his very shoes in the not too distant future. Australia supports you :)
