Update 10/6/11: Bradley wins the Guardian’s Nobel Peace Prize readers’ poll, we mark 500th day of confinement without trial

The UK Guardian confirmed this week that PFC Bradley Manning has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Not only that, but he won their poll which asked readers who should win. Bradley Manning got 39.4% of the vote, while WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange was runner up with 18.9%. The official Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced tomorrow, but either way winning the readers’ poll at the UK Guardian (which has the second-highest readership of any English-language news source in the world) is a noteworthy victory.

Our WhiteHouse.gov petition demanding that UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Juan Mendez be allowed to meet with Bradley is still 1,348 signatures away from meeting the threshold required for an official response. Please go sign now if you haven’t already, and share it with friends! It does require a brief registration. If you run into technical trouble, try the suggestions on this page.

Tomorrow marks the 500th day of confinement endured by Bradley Manning, who has yet to be tried. The Bradley Manning Support Network issued a statement about this injustice which you can read here. 1

  1. Certainly a person deserves humane treatment and my United States of America may need some reminding of that. I have direct ancestors who helped fight in the original American Revolution, and I am very very loyal to the United States for more reasons than that. It is our commitment to fair process which makes the country worthwhile.
