Update 3/3/12: Bradley’s new mailing address

Bradley has a new mailing address. With more frequent courtroom appearances at Fort Meade, MD, Bradley has been moved for the time being to a stockade near DC. Bradley’s lawyer, David Coombs, posted this new address on his blog a few hours ago. Write to Bradley directly at:

Commander, HHC USAG
Attn: PFC Manning
239 Sheridan Ave, Bldg 417
JBM-HH, VA 22211

Coombs also described the specific requirements for sending mail to Bradley:

As previously noted, PFC Manning is eligible to receive mail from anyone who wishes to write to him. However, the confinement facility does place certain restrictions on what can be sent to PFC Manning. The facility will reject any mail that violates postal regulations or contains obscenity, blackmail, contraband or threats. In addition, the facility has the following restrictions:

a) PFC Bradley Manning cannot receive any cash, checks, or money orders. Due to this additional restriction, our office will ensure that PFC Manning has sufficient funds in his detainee account to purchase items.

b) Photographs are only accepted if printed on copy paper. A maximum of six (6) pages are allowed. Pictures on photograph weight paper are not allowed.

c) Incoming mail will be returned to the sender if, in the opinion of the facility, such mail falls into any of the following categories: 1) Contains inflammatory material or advocates escape, violence, disorder or assault; 2) Directly or indirectly threatens the security, safety or order of the facility; 3) Contains coded or otherwise undecipherable language that prevents adequate review of the material; 4) Is received with “Postage Due”; or 5) Contains items of contraband.

Bradley Manning supporters claim a fair hearing is “almost impossible.” In a Wales Online story, supporters fear the military will not give Pfc. Manning a fair trial, given his torturous pre-trial detention treatment, President Obama exerting undue command influence, and the lack of evidence thus far allowed by the defense.

The Support Network’s Kevin Zeese argued that Manning shouldn’t be on trial in the first place, arguing the material he’s accused of releasing belongs in the public domain:

“That ‘collateral murder’ video should not have been classified – it’s just covering war crimes. There’s been no indication that all these low level secrets even were properly classified,” he said. “There shouldn’t have been secrets to begin with, and Manning shouldn’t be accused of releasing classified documents that shouldn’t have been classified in the first place.”

The Center for Constitutional Rights also argues that Manning’s detention period, around 650 days and potentially nearing 800 before his trial begins, is much longer than Constitutionally allowed. (Read more…)

  1. It is difficult to understand why, after all the publicity that Bradley Manning’s case has received worldwide, the US Government are not doing everything in their power to reassure the american public and the rest of the world that they are going to give him a fair trial.

If any “enemy” country was behaving publicly the way the US Government are doing in Bradley Manning’s case, they would be condemning it as an abuse of human rights. Just the over 600 days in prison, with a large spell of solitary confinement and pretrial punishment should be enough to declare a mistrial.

However, as the trial draws near, US conduct is showing itself to be without integrity and the very antithesis of that of an advanced world power which believes in human rights.

There is very good reason to fear that this young man will never receive a fair trial.

  2. If Obama indeed commented on Bradley’s guilt, he has lost my vote for President. And if he did not, he should say so soon, broadcasting this widespread, loud and clear.

    • Hi Alex,
You can find some detailed information about mailing restrictions at Bradley’s facility at Bradleymanning.org (under About–>Write Bradley). Although there’s no specific mention of books, it’s our understanding that the guidelines are limiting (ie. only 6 sheets of paper at a time, max), which makes me think a book would be out of bounds. Will try to get more details for you and post here with what we can find. – Mike, Office Manager
